The transfer window is the period when clubs are allowed to register new players. There are two a year: a long one in summer and a short one in winter. The winter one is what everyone calls “the January window”, and the stories about it start long before it opens. This is the calendar, league by league, and a plain explanation of what can and cannot happen before the doors open.

The dates

Premier League (England)Friday 1 January 2027Monday 1 February 2027, 23:00 UK time (00:00 CET on 2 February)
Ligue 1 (France)1 January 20271 February 2027, 19:59 local time
Serie A (Italy)2 January 20271 February 2027, 20:00 CET
La Liga (Spain)2 January 20272 February 2027 (no closing time published)

The English dates come from the Premier League’s confirmation as published by Arsenal, with the closing day given as 1 February. Arsenal’s page prints “Friday” against that date, which is a slip: 1 February 2027 is a Monday, as Sports Mole’s guide states. The French dates are from Ligue 1’s own announcement, the Italian ones from Serie A’s confirmation as reported by JuveFC, and the Spanish ones from LaLiga’s transfers page.

Germany is the gap. The German league had not published its 2027 winter dates when we checked. Its habit, according to Sport1’s explanation of last winter’s window, is to move a deadline that falls on a weekend to the following Monday at 20:00, which would point to Monday 1 February 2027. Treat that as a guess until the league says so, and we will update this page when it does.

Saudi Arabia ran its 2026 winter window from 5 January to 2 February to line up with Europe, according to FourFourTwo. No 2027 dates had been published when we checked.

What clubs can do right now

Quite a lot, as it happens. A window limits when a player can be registered, not when a deal can be discussed or agreed. Clubs talk to each other all year. A transfer can be agreed in November and completed on 1 January.

There is one rule worth knowing because it drives so many winter stories. A player whose contract runs out at the end of the season may, from 1 January, agree a deal with a club in another country to join for free in the summer. Managers hate this, agents love it, and it is why the names in the “contract ending in June” column start appearing in reports from November onwards.

What “silly season” means

“Silly season” is the newspaper term for the weeks when transfer talk fills the space that matches normally take: the summer, and the run-up to January. Much of what gets written is true, some of it is a club or an agent testing the water, and some of it is invented. We treat it like this: a confirmed move is one the club has announced. Everything else is a report, and we tell you who reported it every time, so you can judge the source yourself.

What to expect in November

The international break from 9 to 19 November is when transfer stories usually get louder, because there are no club matches to write about. Expect reports about players who are out of contract in June, about clubs near the bottom of their tables looking for a January rescue, and about young players at the big clubs who have not played enough. We will cover the ones that come from reporters with a record, label them as reports, and leave the rest alone.
